All The Days I Was Asleep
Homa Bazrafshan’s work covers multiple aspects including either private or public. As a matter of fact it is the artists who may enrich and transcend each aspect to new expressive levels through her process of selection. She re-assembles the commonplace into innovative unconventional settings and thus leads the viewer into her own world of imagination. Human figures as well as other images in Bazrafshan’s work show extensive illustrative characteristics which in part with the expressive transfigurations intensifies the imaginary atmosphere of the works.
You might palely feel déjà vu in her works and that is because the work simultaneously seems imaginary and real-world as well. This suspending in-between world of reality and imagination, with its white colored layering shows the contradictory state of similarity to the traditional Persian painting, and simultaneously its denial; the first represented by the focus on imagination and delicacy of the work, and the latter shown by surrealistic expressiveness.
Hence you could name Bazrafshan amongst the artists who take the way of personal feelings and emotions to create their magical reality; a magical world inside abundant with femininity and outside allover showing the scornful scrutiny of a naughty young girl. This world is totally new to Iran’s contemporary art and besides shows this worldwide unique spirit of the artist and her work.
